Making a magnet

A series of experiments related to understanding how electric current is generated

Aim:

See how steel acquires permanent magnetic properties.

Material:

  • A direct current source.
  • A coil of 300 turns.
  • A piece of steel that can be inserted into the coil.

Process:

  • Carry out the assembly as shown in the picture.
  • Insert the steel inside the coil.
  • Switch on the source for a moment.
  • Check that the steel has acquired the property of attracting ferrous materials.

Tip:

  • Replace the coil connection.
  • Insert the steel.
  • Switch on the source for a moment.
