Magnetic field of a magnet

Series of experiments related to understanding how electric current is generated

Aim:

Show the shape and dimensions of a magnet.

Material:

  • A rectangular magnet or horseshoe magnet
  • A rigid, thin surface (cardboard, plywood, plastic…)
  • Iron filings as fine as possible

Process:

Place the rigid surface on top of the magnet so that the magnet is centrally located.

Spread the filings as evenly as possible over the surface. Tap the edge of the surface with a pencil or pen.

Write down what is observed:
