Magnetic field of a coil

Series of experiments related to understanding how electric current is generated

Aim:

Build a coil and see its behavior when a current flows through it.

Material:

  • 4 - 5 meters of coil wire (failing that, use electrical wire with the thinnest possible plastic insulation, such as the one used in headphones)
  • Plastic reel (reel of electrical tape or adhesive tape)
  • Cardboard sheet.
  • Iron filings.
  • Compass

Process:

Coil Construction
  • Wind the conductive thread on the spool, about 300 turns (spirals). - Fix it with zeal or insulating tape giving it a complete turn. - Remove the insulation from the tips. The coil is ready to go.
Coil behaviour:
  • Make an H-shaped hole in the cardboard sheet, in such a way that the coil can be inserted with half facing up and the other half below.
  • Spread the filings as in the previous activity.
  • Give the usual tapping and connect the source.

Record what you observe:

Next, approach the compass by one of the faces and write down what is observed:

Place the compass on the other side and write down what is observed:

Write down what happens if the connections are switched and all the previous steps are repeated:
