How a magnet works
A series of experiments related to understanding how electric current is generated
Aim:
To understand what happens or what transformations take place in a magnet to generate magnetic fields.
Material:
- Small test tube with stopper.
- Compass.
- Iron filings.
- 300-turn coil.
- Direct current source.
Process:
- Fill the test tube halfway with iron filings.
- Bring it close to the compass.
Observe and note down what happens:

The following:
- Insert the test tube into the coil.
- Switch on the source for a moment and bring the tube close to the compass.
Observe and note down what happens on this occasion:

- Shake the tube vigorously.
- Bring it back to the compass.
Note down what you observe:

Suggestion:
Swap the coil connections and repeat the whole process.
