How a magnet works

A series of experiments related to understanding how electric current is generated

Aim:

To understand what happens or what transformations take place in a magnet to generate magnetic fields.

Material:

•  
• Small test tube with stopper.
• Compass.
• Iron filings.
• 300-turn coil.
• Direct current source.

Process:

• Fill the test tube halfway with iron filings.
• Bring it close to the compass.

Observe and note down what happens:

The following:

• Insert the test tube into the coil.
• Switch on the source for a moment and bring the tube close to the compass.

Observe and note down what happens on this occasion:

• Shake the tube vigorously.
• Bring it back to the compass.

Note down what you observe:

Suggestion:
