February 21, 1985 - Death of John G. Trump, known for his contribution to the development of radiotherapy

John George Trump, after graduating from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1929 with a degree in electrical engineering, received his doctorate from Columbia University. Shortly afterward, he joined the General Electric Company, where he remained for only a few years, until he joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1936 as an assistant professor, teaching until 1973 when he held the position of associate professor and full professor.

During his early years at MIT, he collaborated with Professor R.J. Van de Graaff in the study of the voltage-insulating properties of compressed and high vacuum gases, and the application of Van de Graaff's electrostatic generator to the production of X-rays for use in medicine.

Trump diseñó uno de los primeros generadores de rayos X de un millón de voltios que se utilizó por primera vez, en 1937, en la terapia del cáncer para el Collins P. Huntington Memorial Hospital de Boston.

Después de la guerra, Trump regresó al MIT para enseñar y dirigir investigaciones durante tres décadas. Junto a sus colaboradores, reanudó sus estudios sobre los fenómenos de alto voltaje, la aceleración de electrones de altas energías y la interacción de dichas radiaciones con la materia viva y no viva.

En 1949 inició, de la mano del personal médico de la Clínica Lahey de Boston, una investigación sobre el uso de rayos X de dos millones de voltios en la terapia de enfermedades malignas.
