March 9, 1983 - Death of José María Otero Navascués, father of nuclear energy in Spain

Otero can be considered the father of nuclear energy in Spain, since he was president of the Nuclear Energy Board from 1958 to 1974. During this period, the first Spanish reactor, the Moncloa reactor (1958), was created, and in 1969 the first Spanish nuclear power plant, the José Cabrera plant in Almonacid de Zorita. In 1965 he was appointed president of the European Atomic Energy Society and in 1968 president of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. In 1968 he was appointed Governor of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
