March 19, 1987 – Death of Louis de Broglie, Nobel Prize winner for the discovery of the wave nature of electrons

Louis de Broglie was born in Dieppe, France, on August 15, 1892, into a noble family with a rich intellectual tradition. He studied at the Sorbonne University and earned his doctorate in physics in 1924 with a thesis proposing that particles, such as electrons, have wave properties, which revolutionized quantum mechanics. For this work, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929 and was appointed professor of theoretical physics at the University of Paris in 1928.

De Broglie was a member of the Académie des Sciences (1933) and the Académie Française (1943), and held important positions as permanent secretary of the Académie des Sciences (1942) and advisor to the French Atomic Energy Commission (1945). In addition, he co-founded CERN and was awarded the Legion of Honor, receiving the title of Knight of the Grand Cross in 1961. He passed away on March 19, 1987, in Paris, leaving a lasting legacy in theoretical physics. In his honor, the asteroid (30883) de Broglie is named after him.
