June 8 - World Oceans Day

Our ocean is our future

When we think of public health risks, we may not think of the ocean. However, increasingly, the health of the ocean is closely linked to our health. Some may be surprised to learn that organisms discovered at extreme depths are being used to speed detection of COVID-19, and what might be even more astonishing, is that this is an ecosystem that could provide a solution for humanity.

This is one of the many reasons why we should celebrate World Oceans Day: to remind everyone of the important role the oceans play in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, most of the oxygen we breathe. The purpose of the Day is to raise public awareness about the consequences that human activity has on the oceans and to launch a global citizen movement in favor of the oceans. This day wants to mobilize and unite the world population around the goal of sustainable management of the oceans, which are an important source of food and medicine and an essential part of the biosphere. In short, this celebration is a good reason to celebrate together the beauty, richness and potential of the oceans.
