February 18, 1913 - Frederick Soddy introduces the term isotope

At this date, Frederick Soddy suggested that different elements produced in different radioactive transformations were capable of occupying the same place in the periodic table.

He also coined the term ‘isotope’ (Greek for ‘same place’) to designate atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.

In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his outstanding contributions to the knowledge of radioactive chemistry and research into the existence and nature of isotopes.
