American chemist and university professor. A pioneer in working with isotopes, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934 for obtaining deuterium (heavy hydrogen) and isolating heavy water (deuterium oxide D-20), and later developed the Theory of Paleontological Evolution based on his discoveries in the field of atomic physics.
