Tras licenciarse, en 1893, en Christchurch (Nueva Zelanda), se traslad\u00f3 a la Universidad de Cambridge dos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde para trabajar como ayudante de Joseph J. Thomson (descubridor del electr\u00f3n)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Por sus trabajos en el campo de la f\u00edsica at\u00f3mica, Ernest Rutherford est\u00e1 considerado como uno de los padres de esta disciplina. Investig\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n sobre la detecci\u00f3n de las radiaciones electromagn\u00e9ticas y sobre la ionizaci\u00f3n del aire producido por los rayos X. Estudi\u00f3 las emisiones radioactivas descubiertas por Antoine Henry Becquerel<\/a>, y logr\u00f3 clasificarlas en rayos alfa, beta y gamma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En colaboraci\u00f3n con Frederick Soddy<\/a>, Rutherford formul\u00f3 la teor\u00eda sobre la radiactividad natural asociada a las transformaciones espont\u00e1neas de los elementos, colabor\u00f3 con Hans Geiger<\/a> en el desarrollo del contador de radiaciones conocido como contador Geiger, demostr\u00f3 que las part\u00edculas alfa son iones de helio (m\u00e1s exactamente, n\u00facleos del \u00e1tomo de helio) y, describi\u00f3 un nuevo modelo at\u00f3mico (modelo at\u00f3mico de Rutherford), que posteriormente ser\u00eda perfeccionado por Niels Bohr<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1908, recibi\u00f3 el Premio Nobel de Qu\u00edmica por su descubrimiento de la desintegaci\u00f3n de los elementos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los experimentos llevados a cabo por Rutherford permitieron, adem\u00e1s, el establecimiento de un orden de magnitud para las dimensiones reales del n\u00facleo at\u00f3mico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
