Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton, entre 1927 y 1934, se dedic\u00f3 al a investigaci\u00f3n de la f\u00edsica nuclear bajo la direcci\u00f3n de Ernest Rutherford<\/a>, en el Laboratorio Cavendish de la Universidad de Cambridge y se doctor\u00f3 en 1931.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sus primeras investigaciones incluyeron estudios te\u00f3ricos y experimentales en hidrodin\u00e1mica y en m\u00e9todos indirectos para producir part\u00edculas r\u00e1pidas, trabajando en el acelerador lineal y en lo que m\u00e1s tarde se conocer\u00eda como betatr\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colabor\u00f3 con John Cockroft<\/a> en la construcci\u00f3n de uno de los primeros desintegradores de \u00e1tomo que permit\u00eda demostrar que varios elementos ligeros pod\u00edan desintegrarse por el bombardeo de protones r\u00e1pidos. Por lo tanto, ambos fueron directamente responsables de la desintegraci\u00f3n de un n\u00facleo de un \u00e1tomo de litio mediante el bombardeo con protones acelerados y de la identificaci\u00f3n de los productos como n\u00facleos de helio y, por ello, recibieron la Medalla Hughes de la Royal Society<\/em> de Londres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1951, comparti\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n Cockroft, el Premio Nobel de F\u00edsica por sus trabajos sobre la transmutaci\u00f3n de los n\u00facleos at\u00f3micos mediante part\u00edculas aceleradas artificialmente, lo que facilit\u00f3 el camino para la construcci\u00f3n de los grandes ciclotrones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
