Licenciado en Qu\u00edmica por la Universidad de Nueva York en 1943 y doctorado en F\u00edsica por la Universidad de Columbia en 1951.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1958 comenz\u00f3 a trabajar como docente en la Universidad de Columbia y dirigi\u00f3 su Laboratorio de Investigaci\u00f3n F\u00edsica entre los a\u00f1os 1961 y 1978. En 1960, con permiso de Columbia, pas\u00f3 un tiempo en la Organizaci\u00f3n Europea para la Investigaci\u00f3n Nuclear (CERN)\u00a0<\/a>en Ginebra como miembro de la Fundaci\u00f3n Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sus investigaciones cient\u00edficas se centraron, junto a Melvin Schwartz<\/a> y Jack Steinberger<\/a>, en un m\u00e9todo de detecci\u00f3n de los neutrinos <\/a>que permiti\u00f3 demostrar la doble estructura de los leptones<\/a>. Este descubrimiento facilit\u00f3 a los te\u00f3ricos elaborar un esquema, conocido como el modelo est\u00e1ndar, para la clasificaci\u00f3n de todas las part\u00edculas elementales<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entre 1979 y 1989 dirigi\u00f3 el laboratorio de investigaci\u00f3n del gobierno, Laboratorio Nacional Fermi (Fermilab) en Estados Unidos. Durante su mandato, en 1977, un grupo de f\u00edsicos, el equipo \"E288 Experimental\", dirigido por Lederman, anunci\u00f3 que el acelerador de part\u00edculas del Fermilab estaba produciendo una part\u00edcula con una masa de aproximadamente 6,0 GeV.\u00a0Despu\u00e9s de conseguir m\u00e1s datos, el grupo descubri\u00f3 que esta part\u00edcula en realidad no exist\u00eda, y el \"descubrimiento\" se llam\u00f3 \"Oops-Leon\" como un juego de palabras con el nombre original y el nombre de pila de Lederman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Como director de Fermilab, fue un destacado defensor del proyecto \"Superconducting Super Collider\", entre muchos otros y supervis\u00f3 la construcci\u00f3n del Tevatron, durante d\u00e9cadas el colisionador de part\u00edculas de mayor energ\u00eda del mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1988, fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de F\u00edsica, junto con Schartz y Steinberger, por sus trabajos sobre el neutrino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
