Durante sus estudios de posgrado comenz\u00f3 a trabajar con la espectroscop\u00eda de resonancia paramagn\u00e9tica electr\u00f3nica. Su tesis doctoral, supervisada por Silvio Fallab en la Universidad de Basilea, llev\u00f3 por t\u00edtulo <em>\u201cLa actividad catal\u00edtica de los compuestos de cobre en las reacciones de autooxidaci\u00f3n\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1965, despu\u00e9s de terminar sus estudios de posgrado, W\u00fcthrich se traslad\u00f3 a los Estados Unidos donde se uni\u00f3 al profesor Robert E. Coonick de la Universidad de California (Berkeley) para realizar una formaci\u00f3n postdoctoral. Durante este per\u00edodo, se dedic\u00f3 a un trabajo intensivo sobre la teor\u00eda de la relajaci\u00f3n del esp\u00edn nuclear, la teor\u00eda de grupos y la mec\u00e1nica cu\u00e1ntica. Comenz\u00f3 a trabajar con la t\u00e9cnica recientemente desarrollada y relacionada de la espectroscop\u00eda de resonancia magn\u00e9tica nuclear (RMN) para estudiar la hidrataci\u00f3n de los complejos met\u00e1licos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1967, se uni\u00f3 al Departamento de Biof\u00edsica del Dr. Robert G. Shulman en los Laboratorios Bell Telephone en Murray Hill, Nueva Jersey. All\u00ed se le asign\u00f3 la responsabilidad del mantenimiento de lo que fue uno de los primeros espectr\u00f3metros de RMN superconductores de alta resoluci\u00f3n, que operaba a una frecuencia de resonancia de protones de 220 MHz. Debido a su experiencia, su inter\u00e9s se centr\u00f3 en los centros met\u00e1licos m\u00e1s que en las cadenas polipept\u00eddicas y todos sus proyectos iniciales en RMN de alta resoluci\u00f3n ten\u00edan que ver con hemoprote\u00ednas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1969 regres\u00f3 a Suiza para incorporarse al Instituto Polit\u00e9cnico de Z\u00fcrich (ETH) donde permaneci\u00f3 durante 32 a\u00f1os desempe\u00f1ando diferentes cargos y desarrollando una prol\u00edfica carrera investigadora. Colabor\u00f3, entre otros, con el premio Nobel Richard R. Ernst en el desarrollo de los primeros experimentos de RMN bidimensional, y estableci\u00f3 el efecto nuclear <em>Overhauser <\/em>como una forma conveniente de medir distancias dentro de las prote\u00ednas. Esta investigaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s tarde condujo a la asignaci\u00f3n completa de resonancias para el inhibidor de la tripsina pancre\u00e1tica bovina y el glucag\u00f3n, entre otros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2002 recibi\u00f3 el Premio Nobel de Qu\u00edmica por su \"desarrollo de la espectroscop\u00eda de resonancia magn\u00e9tica nuclear para determinar la estructura tridimensional de macromol\u00e9culas biol\u00f3gicas en soluci\u00f3n\u201d.
