Whilst deuterium is abundant in seawater, tritium is an extremely rare isotope of hydrogen and is scarce on Earth. There are barely a few kilograms available across the entire planet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if a commercial power station needs tritium to operate every day, where will it get it from? The answer lies in one of the most fascinating concepts in chemical and nuclear engineering relating to fusion: <strong>tritium breeding. <\/strong>The fusion reactor will be able to produce its own fuel as it consumes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lithium \u2018fertilisation blankets'<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure the machine is self-sustaining, modern fusion reactors\u2014such as the international <strong>ITER <\/strong>project\u2014are designed with special \u2018active walls\u2019 inside the chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These structures are known as breeding blankets and are filled with lithium. The lithium acts as the passive ingredient that lies in wait inside the reactor, ready to be transformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A closed and self-sustaining cycle: Step by step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cycle is a perfect example of physical recycling and operates in three synchronised stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The fusion reaction:<\/strong> Inside the reactor, deuterium and tritium nuclei fuse due to the extremely high temperatures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neutron escape: <\/strong>As a result of this fusion, <strong>helium and a high-energy neutron <\/strong>are produced. As it has no electric charge, this neutron escapes from the plasma and collides directly with the lithium in the reactor walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel creation: <\/strong>Upon striking the fertile layers, a nuclear reaction occurs that splits the lithium and creates <strong>new tritium<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This new tritium is extracted from the walls using special systems, purified and reinjected into the plasma. In this way, the reactor itself produces the fuel it needs to continue operating in an almost perfect and self-sustaining cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"655\" src=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Ciclo-tritio_Fusion.png\" alt=\"Ciclo del tritio en fusi\u00f3n\" class=\"wp-image-41223\" style=\"width:653px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Ciclo-tritio_Fusion.png 1200w, https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Ciclo-tritio_Fusion-500x273.png 500w, https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Ciclo-tritio_Fusion-768x419.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is it such a secure system?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tritium cycle not only solves the problem of scarcity, but is also one of the main reasons why fusion is a clean and safe form of energy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No hazardous transport: <\/strong>As tritium is produced directly within the reactor itself and is consumed instantly, <strong>there is no need to store or transport radioactive material outside the plant.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No excess<\/strong>: The reactor produces only the tritium it needs at any given time.
