Waste is another source of renewable energy and raw materials that can be used in the manufacture of other products with the right treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These raw materials, obtained from recycling or reprocessing, are called secondary raw materials. Most waste ends up in landfills, and a very small percentage is used for recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does household waste consist of?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Waste produced by households is called \u2018Municipal Solid Waste\u2019 (MSW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organic = 44%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paper = 21%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plastics = 11%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glass = 7%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Others = 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metal = 4%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organic Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This consists of the food we consume in our homes, generating approximately 2 kg per person. Around 90% of the waste produced at home comes from food preparation (organic waste and packaging).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organic waste can be recycled and used as compost, and it can also be used to produce biogas and a fertiliser called \u2018digestate\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic waste comes from petroleum, so not recycling it means depleting a non-renewable resource and increasing CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastics take a very long time to degrade and are difficult to recycle as they must undergo an arduous process of sorting the different types that make them up at recycling plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most plastic waste comes from single-use containers and packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paper and cardboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paper has a very simple recycling process, and 2.5 million tonnes of paper are recycled in Spain, but we should still be recycling more. Paper recycling prevents the felling of trees, reduces water consumption by 86%, and energy consumption by 65%. For every sheet of paper recycled, the equivalent of two 20-watt energy-saving light bulbs operating for one hour is saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With all these reasons, you have no excuse not to recycle!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that some types of paper, such as laminated, adhesive, waxed, fax, and carbonless paper, cannot be recycled, so we should not use them excessively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Glass<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is fully recyclable, but its manufacture requires large energy investments as it is produced at high temperatures. It is the best container for any drink or food, despite being replaced by other types of containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glass containers can be used more than once before recycling, but in recent years, \u2018non-returnable\u2019 glass containers have begun to be used, and there is no standardisation of bottles, so that some containers can replace others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did you know?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For every glass bottle that is recycled, the energy needed to power a television for 3 hours or 5 energy-saving 20W light bulbs for 4 hours is saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0Tins<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Reciclaje\" width=\"302\" height=\"190\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5940\" style=\"height: 94px; width: 150px;\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/latas.png\" alt=\"Reciclaje\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They are single-use containers. Their manufacture involves significant costs. With the energy needed to manufacture a can, we could watch television for two hours.<br>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Briks<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5941\" style=\"height: 150px; width: 150px;\" title=\"Reciclaje\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/brik.png\" alt=\"Reciclaje\" width=\"290\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/brik.png 290w, https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/brik-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They are quite difficult to recycle because they are made from a mixture of cellulose, aluminium, and plastic, but their use has increased due to their light weight and ease of handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can we do? Apply the 4 Rs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduce<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reduce waste even before you buy something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, when you are in the shop, take the time to think about what you can reuse or recycle, and what you will have to throw away. Reducing means just that: throwing away less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As experts say, one of the best ways to reduce the amount of waste is to stop buying things we don't urgently need. This means we have to be careful when we go into a shop to buy something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reuse<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A book you've just finished reading, a plastic bag, an ice cream tub, an old toy, a jumper that's too small for you\u2026 There's no need to throw any of these things away. You can prevent them from ending up in a landfill by reusing them yourself or giving them to someone who can reuse them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recycling<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, there are some things you can't reuse, such as empty aluminium cans or last year's phone book, but the materials these things are made of can be reused over and over again by recycling them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of throwing away aluminium cans, glass bottles, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and other recyclable containers, you can put them in special bins that are everywhere. Recycling centres sort the materials and send them to factories that make new products out of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recycling is turning used paper into pulp and using that pulp to make new paper. Click here if you want to learn how to do it yourself at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycling is crushing used glass bottles and melting them down to make new glass items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycling is melting down used aluminium cans, forming sheets with the molten metal, and using them to make new cans or other aluminium products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycling is shredding and melting used plastic bottles to make carpets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In other words, recycling is turning something old into something new. It's like getting something for free. They are single-use containers. Their manufacture involves a high cost. With the energy needed to manufacture a can, we could watch TV for 2 hours.<br>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the human ability to analyse the possible options available to make intelligent choices. This is the most important R because, if we reflect for a moment, we will quickly realise that it is not profitable, reasonable, or responsible to continue wasting resources without measure.
