After completing his studies, he began studying medicine in Heidelberg and then travelled to Stockholm to continue his training in chemistry under the Swedish <a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/anniversaries\/august-20-1779-birth-of-jons-jacob-berzelius-considered-one-of-the-fathers-of-modern-chemistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Berzelius<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1836, he began teaching as a professor of chemistry at the University of G\u00f6ttingen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was one of the few scientists who became interested in organic chemistry, writing several textbooks on organic and inorganic chemistry, such as \"<em>Lehrbuch der Chemie<\/em>\" (1825), \"<em>Grundriss der Anorganischen Chemie<\/em>\" (1830), \"<em>Grundriss der Organischen Chemie<\/em>\" (1840) and \"<em>Praktische \u00dcbungen in der Chemischen Analyse<\/em>\" (1854).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W\u00f6hler isolated the c<a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/recursos-educativos\/monographic-periodic-table-of-the-elements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hemical elemen<\/a>ts aluminium metal and beryllium; he co-discovered beryllium, silicon and silicon nitride, discovered the synthesis of calcium carbide (obtaining acetylene from it) and demonstrated, with his synthesis of the organic compound called urea, that it is a product of vital processes that can be obtained in the laboratory from inorganic matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a curiosity, in 1827 he obtained metallic aluminium as a fine powder and, in 1845, improved methods enabled him to obtain it in completely metallic globules. Nine years later <a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/recursos-educativos\/henri-etienne-sainte-claire-deville-considered-one-great-chemists-19th-century\/\">Henri \u00c9tienne Sainte-Claire Devill<\/a>e, who was unaware of W\u00f6hler's work, adopted the same methods in his efforts to prepare the metal on an industrial scale; the result of W\u00f6hler's claim of priority was that the two scientists became good friends and joined in an investigation, published in 1856-1857, which yielded \"adamantine boron\". By the same method that had been successful with aluminium (reduction of chloride by potassium) W\u00f6hler, in 1828, obtained metallic beryllium and yttrium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Justus Liebig, he published an investigation on bitter almond oil in which they demonstrated by their experiments that a group of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms can behave like an element, take the place of an element and be exchanged for other elements in chemical compounds.
