A year later, he was deported to the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, where he remained until his liberation in 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same year, after graduating from Montpellier high school, he entered the <em>\u00c9cole des Mines<\/em> in Paris, one of the most prestigious engineering schools in France, graduating in 1948 as a mining engineer and already a French citizen (he was naturalized in 1946).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He started working for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Center National de la Recherche Scientifique<\/em> (CNRS) <\/a>and received his doctorate in nuclear physics from the Coll\u00e8gue de France (Paris) in 1954, where he worked in the laboratory of<a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/recursos-educativos\/frederic-joliot\/\"> Jean Fr\u00e9deric Joliot-Curie.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1959, he joined the staff of <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CERN (<em>Conseil Europ\u00e9en pour la Recherche Nucl\u00e9aire<\/em>)<\/a> in Geneva, one of the world's leading research institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1984, he became a professor at the School of Advanced Studies in Physics and Chemistry in Paris, and a year later, he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1992, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing and developing particle detectors, specifically, the multiwire proportional chamber (see photo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In France, Charpak was a strong advocate of nuclear power and was a member of the committee that publishes the <em>Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong>But what is a multi-wire proportional chamber?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/charpak_georges_camara.jpg\" alt=\"C\u00e1mara Proporcional Multihilos de Charpak\" class=\"wp-image-7268\" title=\"C\u00e1mara Proporcional Multihilos de Charpak\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/charpak_georges_camara.jpg 220w, https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/charpak_georges_camara-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The study of the reactions, sometimes very complex, between elementary particles provides knowledge of their properties and the forces that act between them. Sometimes several hundred particles can be created in a single collision, and to interpret them scientists need to record the trajectory of each of the particles involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until the 1970s, the recording was made using photographic means and the images were later analyzed with the help of special measuring devices, a slow and laborious process.
