Among his achievements are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduce concepts such as \u2018packing defraction\u2019, a measure of the energy involved in the association of protons and neutrons within the nucleus of an atom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Correctly predicted the existence of the neutron in 1920 (as a proton-electron complex) and was the first to use the word \u2018neutron\u2019 about the atomic nucleus (the neutron was detected experimentally by <a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/recursos-educativos\/james-chadwick-discoverer-neutron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James Chadwick<\/a> in 1932).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He predicted the existence of heavy hydrogen (or deuterium)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was the first to propose the basic principle of nuclear fusion in 1915, four years before <a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/recursos-educativos\/jean-baptiste-perrin-discoveries-resolved-dispute-lasted-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean Baptiste Perrin<\/a> published his theory in 1919-1920. Using <a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/anniversaries\/november-21-1905-albert-einstein-unveils-famous-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Albert Einstein's concept of the equivalence of mass and energy<\/a>, he showed that by combining four hydrogen atoms to produce one helium atom, a small amount of mass would be converted into energy; he correctly theorised that this process was a source of sterlar energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the early 1930s, he contributed to the second cyclotron with fellow University of Chicago scientist Robert James Moon, greatly improving its design.
