The two showed that uranium underwent fission when bombarded with neutrons, converting part of its mass into energy (according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/anniversaries\/november-21-1905-albert-einstein-unveils-famous-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Albert Einstein's famous equation\u00a0<\/a>relating mass and energy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He worked closely with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/recursos-educativos\/enrico-fermi-nobel-prize-achieving-first-nuclear-chain-reaction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enrico Fermi<\/a>\u00a0to initiate the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rinconeducativo.org\/en\/anniversaries\/december-2-1942-first-self-sustaining-nuclear-chain-reaction-is-achieved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago Pile-1 reactor on December 2, 1942<\/a>. He was responsible for removing the control rod that started the reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the war, he supervised the decommissioning the Chicago Pile-1 reactor and became the director of the Argonne National Laboratory between 1946 and 1956. He also supervised the construction of several new nuclear reactors, including the Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I) in Idaho, USA.
