His career was meteoric since shortly after he went on to manage the factory (1929), being transferred to Madrid in 1931. In 1933 he was appointed Technical Director of Standard El\u00e9ctrica and in 1935 he was already General Director and President of the Portuguese subsidiary of this entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the Civil War, he returned to his origins, as Managing Director of Electra de Viesgo, being appointed Director in 1950.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1957, following the constitution of Nuclenor (by Iberduero and Viesgo) for the construction, start-up and operation of the Santa Mar\u00eda de Garo\u00f1a nuclear power plant, he was appointed Vice Chairman and CEO. There he begins to get excited about this energy source of which he would always be a great defender. He participated in the founding of the Spanish Atomic Forum (now the Nuclear Forum) occupying its presidency from 1969. He was also part of the Board of Directors of the European Atomic Forum (Foratom) and was the first non-American citizen to join, in 1974, the Atomic Industrial Forum of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cortines received, among other distinctions, the title of Officer of the French Legion of Honor (1965), the Grand Cross of Civil Merit (1974) and the title of Mountaineer of the Year (1975).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his land, Cantabria, he was dean of the College of Industrial Engineers (1958-1973), president of the Board of Trustees of the University of Santander, member of the Cultural Institution of Cantabria (1970) and vice president of the Ateneo (1973-1975). .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He died in Santander, at the age of 79, on August 16, 1988.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manuel Guti\u00e9rrez-Cortines y Colomer (Santander, 1901 - 1980) The industrial engineer Manuel Guti\u00e9rrez-Cortines was in love with electricity and nuclear energy, to which he dedicated his entire life.
