The only son of the well-known Sir Joseph John Thomson<\/a>, in 922 he became a professor at the University of Aberdeen, where he carried out experiments that revealed the diffraction of a beam of electrons when passing through a crystalline substance, thus confirming the theories of Louis de Brogli<\/a>e, about wave-particle duality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new theoretical conception of the nature of radiation made it possible to confirm Einstein's previous hypotheses and explain the Compton effect (named after its discoverer, Arthur Compton<\/a>), which was lacking in the wave theory of light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1937, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with the American physicist\u00a0Clinton J. Davisson<\/a>, for their work on the diffraction of electrons in crystals and the demonstration of their wave properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1943, he was awarded the title of Sir and in 1946 he served as advisor to the British delegation to the United Nations Security Council and the Atomic Energy Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
