The kitchen

There are two different types of stoves depending on the type of energy they consume: gas and electric.

Within the electric there are the following types:

  • Conventional
  • Glass ceramic
  • Induction

Induction cookers are those that use magnetic waves to heat food, they are much more efficient and faster than other electric cookers.

But generally, gas stoves are much more efficient than electric ones.


More than 50% of homes use microwaves. Not only is it faster than the traditional oven, but its use saves between 60 and 70% of the energy consumed.

The oven

The oven is one of the appliances that consumes the most electricity in the home and, therefore, its use must be controlled. There are two kinds: gas and electric, although in homes the most used is electric.

Practical tips to save energy cooking

  • For electric type kitchens, "cookware" should be used and the rest of the utensils with a thick diffuser bottom, since this way we will achieve a more homogeneous temperature throughout the container.
  • Whenever we can, it is better to use super-fast pressure cookers, they have almost no steam loss, consume less energy and also save us a lot of time.
  • It is advisable to cover the pots during cooking, with this simple gesture we will save energy.
  • Turn off the electric cooker 5 minutes before finishing cooking, in this way the residual heat is used and energy is saved (in induction cookers it is not possible).
  • We have to make the most of the capacity of our oven, and if possible cook several foods at the same time.
  • The oven should not be opened unnecessarily, because doing so loses around 20% of energy.
  • Turn off the oven a few minutes before finishing cooking, in this way the residual heat is used and we save energy.
  • Never preheat the oven for more than 1 hour, it is not necessary that much time and we also waste energy.
  • The most efficient electric ovens are convection ovens.
