Determining the poles of a magnet

Series of experiments related to understanding how electric current is generated

Aim:

Observe how the poles of a magnet generate different behaviors of the magnetic field.

Material:

  • Two compasses.
  • Steel magnets (rectangular or horseshoe, irrelevant).

To carry out the experience, you can use the magnets that appear in the images or classic rectangular ones. Break one in half with a strong, dry blow, holding it tightly in a sturdy table vice (do not do it with ceramic magnets because they break badly).

Next we are going to carry out two experiences in which we will determine and locate the poles of a magnet and a curious property of magnets.

Process:

Place the two compasses, as you can see in the photograph, and carefully observe the needle of each of the compasses located in front of the ends of the magnet.
